Hair truths

BEFORE
I eluded to this blog a couple of weeks ago, but changed tack last week due to circumstances. Anyway hair things, how much is it menopause and how much is to just growing older. So a couple of weeks ago I was in Southampton with my daughter and she decided on a brow waxing. After Debenhams shut I no longer had access to the Brow Bar and had stopped having my brows done, relying on my eldest to pluck them when I saw her. So seeing an opportunity to tidy them up I thought I would pamper myself. Here is me with the lovely pen marks to show where my brows should begin and end. Whilst chatting to the lovely lady in Benefit brow bar the discussion turned to the elephant in the room. “The Moustache”. Every time I put on makeup I kept thinking is it time to bit the bullet and have the dreaded moustache removed. It’s not that bad I kept saying, pulling out the every thickening/lengthening hairs that kept appearing.

AFTER

It was an interesting discussion, as if it were completely normal to have my moustache removed and that it was nothing to be ashamed off. So why did it make me feel old. I suppose because one of my memories of my mother was of the hairs growing over her top lip and the random hairs on her face. I always associated this with my mother when she was old. So does that mean I am now old. Well no, it just means that my body is changing. Hair growth is a common thing at our age and during menopause. Ironically, hair on my legs and arm pits don’t grow anywhere near as much as they use to. Just a little tidy up each week to keep them under control. Of course, do have to check the hairs on my toes and shave these off when too long. YES you can get long hairs growing on your toes, keep an eye out.

So back to the moustache, you may have seen the video but here it is again. Me having my moustache removed. Does it hurt? Yes it does, but it’s OK. It does sting afterwards.

On another note, my hair on my head has been growing longer and is much thicker than it has been. I know that this is not what others have found when going through menopause. That often women find their hair thins. My hair dresser has commented on how thick and long my hair is. The downside is that it doesn’t take long for the roots to come through and I need my colour doing more often. As with most things it is swings and roundabouts.

So if you don’t like your additional facial hair, get rid of it. If you don’t care about it then leave it. Be confident in whatever you decide. Something I have found is that my pores are now like craters on my face. Which is fine until I want to wear foundation and I find that my skin looks like the outside of a golf ball. I have invested in a good primer (Laura Mercier), which I put on before the foundation. Basically it is a filler which I ladle on with a trowel. It does provide a good base for my foundation. Did find that I had to also invest in a winter foundation as my summer one makes me look orange. Something I hadn’t really thought about.

Anyway enjoy my pain, no pain no gain!!!!

Thanks

Lois
