It was interesting in the UK that Labour were successfully elected to government, but didn’t really gain any more favour with voters. Rather those that didn’t want to vote Conservative, for whatever reason, moved to The Reform party. Splitting the vote and letting Labour in or in some case the Liberal Democrats. The quote I saw summed it up is that “Labour didn’t not win the election, rather the Conservatives lost it”. Despite being predicted a move to the far right in France, many came out to vote to keep the views in the middle ground. Providing a little hope for humanity in my eyes. The continued immigration debate in the UK will never stop. Though I find it ironic that our English team would only have 3 players in it if it weren’t for immigration. But that could play into both sides of the argument. And don’t get me start in the US. One candidate who really should retire and the other should be in prison. What is the world coming to if these two are the best candidates that the supposed biggest super power of our planet has to offer. In the words of many school teachers, “Must try harder America”.
I believe that everyone should vote. I get both frustrated, angry and sad when people say they don’t vote. Some quite sheepishly, some apologetically but other quite proud of the fact that they don’t vote. The problem is I don’t see the point of not voting. Otherwise we may as well have a dictatorship. We have a democratic system to allow everyone, who has the legal right to vote, to air their opinion on those that wish represent us. That is what our politicians are suppose to do, represent us. Saying all this I think our system needs a bit of an upgrade. Here are a few ideas.
Firstly, everyone should be made to vote, but there should be an option which has “None of the above” so people can legitimately say that the politicians/party in their constituency does not represent them. If no party gets a majority share then they have to go back to the drawing board to work out what needs to be changed to represent the majority of the population.
Second, first past the post seems ridiculous and some form of proportional representation is needed so that those in government represent the views of the people. This way those that say well my vote won’t count can’t say it anymore, it will.
Maybe we should also limit the vast number of parties who stand for parliament. I am not saying like the Americans, but it does seem slightly ridiculous with some of those that stand. But I suppose that provides the diversity. Am in two minds on this one.
Those that are appointed to cabinet office should have relevant experience and understanding of the thing they are managing. It seems that has happened to a degree this time around, but this should always be the case. Maybe it shouldn’t be a career thing, that politicians should be only allowed to represent our country for a fixed amount of time. Thus allowing others to come through the ranks with new ideas. But then I am not sure the practicalities of this. Would people actually do it. They should definitely have had some sort of life experience before moving into politics so that they can really represent us. From that point of view definitely a lot less coming from private schools and so continuing to perpetuate a very limited view of our country.
I have always voted and will continue to do so, I have educated my children in continuing this life long obligation we have to our country. The views here are my own and I question them continually and will listen to others views and opinions and change my mind. That is what we should all do, continue to strive for better.
Thanks
